Music Categories
- Concert
- Concert works are works suitable for standard concert repertoire. They are usually secular in nature: although some may have texts that mention religious or spiritual ideas, the main focus of the work lies elsewhere.
- Sacred
- Sacred works are those performed in a religious or spiritual setting such as liturgical music or church-service music. Many of these pieces may also be suited for standard concert repertoire.
- Occasional
- Occasional works are intended to be sung for specific occasions such as holidays and special events, and may be either sacred or secular in nature. Some of these, such as carols, may be well suited to standard repertoire, while others, such as wedding or funeral music, might not fit as well.
- Educational
- Educational pieces are intended to specifically provide an educational experience for the performers. Examples would be etudes, musical workbooks, and easy pieces for early players and ensembles.
- Jazz
- While this category may contain works that would easily fit into any of the above category, jazz works place specific emphasis on elements specific to the genre.
- Pop/Rock
- As with the jazz category, many works in the Pop/Rock genre might fit into the first four categories, but are instead filed here due to their emphasis on the style
- Textbooks/Classroom Materials
- Materials in this category may not be music in and of themselves, but rather pertain to it. This differs from the educational category in this respect: these are not stand-alone pieces but books, worksheets, and other materials for use in the classroom and educational settings
- Other
- Other items that do not fit into the other categories may be found here. Examples would be non-classroom oriented books and other materials related to music.
